Why have a Social Media Manager?

...For many this is not difficult to answer, but there are some for whom this question continues to baffle them. And don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why they don’t grasp the concept fully.

One of my clients is a 50 something business owner who continues to question what he's paying me for. I’m happy to remind him of what it is I do for him, and his company. You see he runs a successful furniture and coffee shop. He and his wife have worked extremely hard to get to where they are today, and they used very little social media to get there. So you can forgive him for undervaluing SM marketing, let alone not completely grasping the need for a Social Media manager. Thankfully, he’s been around long enough to know that “The world may hate change, but it is the only thing that has brought progress”. He’s a smart businessman, so when he heard the word on the street is ‘Social Media Marketing’ he (reluctantly) acquired my services in order to build up the companies online presence.

His views are in the majority. So it’s fair to ask the question, what exactly do I do?

In a word, ‘Sell’. Please don't get me wrong, I know Im not out there saving lives, but I do believe that I provide a valuable and meaningful service, to the few among us who are unable to fully navigate this secret marketing world. I enjoy using my words. I enjoy the creative side of Social Media post writing and creating digital images that correspond.

People in my line of work can do a variety of different things to help and support those who employ our services. We guide, support, encourage and motivate those without the confidence to build an online presence.

The upside for me is that I learn from the client too. They teach me about their craft, the stories behind their success and the reason for their passion; and I can take all of that useful information to the bank.

YSM :)
